The quiet tranquility around Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) Highway 36 trailhead was shattered — in the best way possible — as the Rotary Club of Chester fired up the grills for their legendary Trail Angel Barbecue. On Tuesday, July 14, from 10:00am- 2:00pm, 50 weary, dirt-covered hikers descended on the trailhead for a hard-earned feast. The event was hosted by Rotary Club Member Terry Johnson and member Tyson Graham flipped burgers with finesse.
For one afternoon, the Rotary’s pop-up haven transformed into a roaring success of laughter, camaraderie, and unbelievable appetites. The scent of searing beef wafted across the highway and drew in the hungry hikers who had spent weeks surviving on freeze-dried meals, ramen bombs, and trail mix. Blenders whirred non-stop, churning out sweet frosty milkshakes that were scraped clean to the last drop. Added to this were cold watermelon wedges, icy beverages, and "world famous” potato salad, which earned its name as hikers from across the United States and around the globe enjoyed every bite. Hikers who had just tackled grueling ascents from Belden or Bucks Summit swapped epic stories with the locals. Boots were rested, blisters compared, and stories of epic wildlife encounters echoed around the picnic tables.
It wasn’t just a simple lunch; it was a lifeline of trail magic. By the time the hikers packed up their trekking poles and shouldered their packs, they were recharged, energized, and ready to conquer the next leg of their journey north towards Lassen Volcanic National Park and beyond.
